About the Global Martial Arts Association

gmaa logo

The association began with one community dojo in North Texas, which opened in 2004 by Sensei Jon Hodge, along with his son Michael. After teaching countless classes to students in the area, and creating his own weapons instructional curriculums, Sensei Michael launched Ultimate Training in 2007. Ultimate Bo and Ultimate Chuks were made available for both students and instructors/school owners to train, earn rank through distance training, and instructor certifications. Since then, thousands of martial artists around the world have purchased, trained, and learned from our video instructional programs. Our association also trains and ranks students in physical facilities in Texas, Oklahoma, and other certified instructors’ centers.

We offer students from anywhere in the world the opportunity to earn rank and certifications through our Black Belt Distance Training at Home courses. Home study students are given a great deal of support and training attention, which makes it much more feasible to grasp the understanding of the art at hand. We hold our distance training students to the same standard of proficiency as our physical training students. We have a proven system of video rank exams, feedback loop, and progress indicators which we have fine-tuned over the last seven years. We are 100% committed to upholding the values of martial arts training, and making training more accessible. In the past, you were limited to learning only from local instructors, now you have the ability to train in new styles and weapons with an accredited organization. Since our humble beginnings in a small community dojo, we have and always will uphold the values of dedication, service, humility, positive action, and excellence. We look forward to training with you soon!

Our Values

  1. For the best and highest good of all.
  2. High levels of excellence.
  3. Total transparency.
  4. Open and honest communication.
  5. Integrity in every action.

Leadership Board

The Global Martial Arts Association Leadership Board is a group of individuals who have been selected to represent and guide the association’s path. Board members have been selected for their life-long dedication to the martial arts, among other notable service-oriented character traits. The Leadership Board is not at the top of our association, but rather the bottom. Through being the guiding instructors or advisors for our students and members, the Leadership Board is helping to lead our entire membership to success, through being the foundation of our tenents. We are here to serve our members.

Dustin Koppel Bio_500Dustin Koppel

“I have been involved in martial arts for 9 years now, and teaching for 8 years. I began with Krav Maga and Muay Thai Kickboxing. I earned a black belt under John Gabriele (who trained under Darren Levine, who trained under Imi Lichtenfeld). Two years later I got involved with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and haven’t stopped training since. I am an MMA and kickboxing title-belt holder. I enjoy competing, but my true passion is teaching and watching people grow into leaders. I have always been active in helping my community and wanted to share those values with my students, as they become leaders in their community. When I am not at my school teaching (or teaching my global students) I enjoy spending time with my wife and finding new adventures.”

Ultimate Bo

Ultimate Bo SealThe one and only officially recognized white to black bo training style. Ultimate Bo is rooted from Okinawan Kobudo movements, but with a modernized, freestyle styling. In the freestyle bo portion of the course, you will learn bo techniques (sweeps, thrusts, spins, stances, combos) and forms/katas. In the sparring bo portion, you will practice a small assortment of combat bo strikes, blocks, and sparring theory. Ultimate Bo uses a unique “chevron” ranking system, which allows you to wear your UB rank as chevron patches on the sleeve of your gi, while wearing to belt rank of your core martial art (such as karate). Ultimate Bo training also builds a student’s cardiovascular system, arm strength, coordination, and weapons extension understanding.

Ultimate Chuks

Ultimate ChuksA complete course of study for students wanting to master this ancient Okinawan weapon. Ultimate Chuks brings a student through the yellow, green, blue, brown, red, black, and 2nd black chevron levels. The style evolved from traditional Okinawan nunchaku combat techniques, and has added a modernistic flair. The freestyle nunchakus portion of the course focuses on strikes, spins, handling, stances, and combos for single nunchaku. In the advanced levels, you will move into double nunchakus, taking into consideration the difference of dual-wielding weapons. The course teaches 10 complete nunchaku katas, with step-by-step instruction and various angles. The sparring nunchakus portion of the style focuses on combat training, and practice with a unique type of nunchaku point sparring.
