That is a sweeping palm block, and if I need to I cup the hand or grab to maintain control before the kick.

You have to adjust your stances in a live situation. The stance should be a back stance however you have to adjust for distance and angle of attack.

I am not familiar with the ty bo hand held punching bag. If it is designed for punching, should be ok for karate hand techniques. Where you might run into a safety issue is kicking. The bag needs sufficient padding and surface area for full power kicking practice. I have used many smaller hand pads for targeting practice with kicks, blocks and punches where the person training practices targeting and control of kicks.

Hello Michaellee1983 and Welcome to the Shotokan Program. Indeed in our system we are working on balance and harmony in our life. It is through balance and harmony of your mind, body, spirit and emotions that true power is found and used for your highest good and the highest good of all others. Complete Shotokan Karate does give on a balanced training system to help one create the inner strength within them that can be translated into what ever level of being needed to protect yourself and others. Not to say that you can not do the same in others systems that have a more aggressive nature to them. I do believe that one must be balanced in all that they do or your life situation can get difficult. I have survived many tough fights over the years fighting opponents that were much better fighters than me. I owe this to being able to command presence in the moment even in the face of what seems to be a larger force than myself. I owe this personal power to the countless hours of training within the Spirit of Karate-Do.

Actordaddy – I love the post on the different Kiai system your Aikido teachers use. I agree with them on this subject.

Yes, it is a good ideal to train with the Kiai and that way it becomes a natural muscle memory item, just like your other techniques. One of the best places is where indicated in the Kata…

Yes, we have scheduled three important new systems for the Shotokan program. (1) An instructor Certification program. (2) A Masters program for certification beyond 1st dan. (Currently I work with individuals that contact me wanting to test for 2nd dan and higher adn test them as needed) (3) A complete set of training classes for each level of development.

So we have some very exciting new realeases and changes to upgrade and improve our systems.

This is a pretty cool home study series. We first produced this series and used it in our Karate School as a suppliment to our traditional karate training. This series is still being used today in our Karate School, home Dojos and martial arts schools all around the world… In 2015 Sensei Michael is scheduled to reshoot the entire series in our new studio upgrading the teaching, video and sound quality of the course. In fact we are very excited about our production schedule for 2015…. We will be keeping everyone up to date as we move forward with the upgrading and creation of new systems in the Black Belt at Home Training System…
